Grounding his musicianship in the American Fingerstyle guitar tradition, Matthew developed an acute sensitivity to acoustic nuance, thumb independence, and polyphonic voice leading. Decades of live Fingerstyle performance and ensemble direction parallel this quiet acoustic discipline, giving his playing exceptional rhythmic vitality, dynamic range, and tonal balance across every register.
At the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Matt chairs the Guitar department and teaches both classroom and individual lessons. As a faculty member at Alverno College, he teaches Fingerstyle guitar and Music History. Additionally, Matt serves as the Acoustic Guitar Retreat Director at the Interlochen Center for the Arts.
